Job Description

An orthodontist is a dental professional who focuses on diagnosing, preventing, and treating dental and facial irregularities, particularly those related to the alignment of teeth and jaws. Their role involves improving the appearance, function, and health of their patients’ teeth and bite.

Key Responsibilities:

Diagnose orthodontic problems: Evaluate patients’ teeth and jaw structures using x-rays, photographs, and dental records to diagnose alignment and bite problems.

Treatment Planning: Develop personalized treatment plans to correct bite problems, crooked teeth, or other oral health issues. This may include recommending braces, clear aligners, or other orthodontic appliances.

Orthodontists and Appliances: Place and adjust braces, retainers, and other appliances to straighten teeth or align jaws.

Progress Monitoring: Check and adjust braces or orthodontic appliances regularly to ensure that teeth and jaws are moving properly throughout the treatment process.

Patient Education: Educate patients about proper oral hygiene and care of orthodontic appliances to prevent problems during treatment.

Collaboration: Working with general dentists, oral surgeons, and other specialists to provide comprehensive care, especially when complex issues or surgeries are involved.

Aftercare: Providing retainers and post-treatment monitoring to ensure that teeth remain in their new position after treatment is complete.

Skills and Qualifications:

Licensure: Must be licensed to practice dentistry and have completed certification or additional training in orthodontics.

Skills:

Strong knowledge of dental anatomy, growth patterns, and biomechanics.

Skilled in working with orthodontic tools and techniques.

Excellent communication skills to educate and guide patients through their treatment plans.

Good attention to detail and the dexterity to make precise adjustments.

Orthodontists typically work in private practices, dental clinics, or hospitals, and often run their own teams and offices. They may also participate in continuing education to stay up to date with the latest techniques and technologies in the field.
